Right in the heart of Shannon’s township, Te Maire Park is a great place to enjoy fish 'n' chips or a picnic – before taking a wander through the memorial garden and nearby Shannon Railway Station Museum.
Te Maire Park is more than 100 years old and was one of the first sites in New Zealand where an Arbour Day planting was held. Over a century ago, local school children, both Maori and Pakeha, planted native and European trees together for the community to enjoy. Situated adjacent to the township, and with picnic tables onsite, it's a great place to enjoy fish n chips or a picnic.
The Shannon Railway Station Museum is situated in the long border garden along Plimmer Terrace and is open Friday to Sunday 10.00am to 4.00pm. At the southern end of the park is the Shannon Cenotaph and memorial garden, and a monument to a local soldier who was killed in the Boer War - one of the few such monuments around New Zealand. There are several places for refreshments across the road and 24hr toilets available nearby on Ballance St.
